Fler has been the subject of much controversy in the past, particularly in the German music scene, and not without good reason. This will not fundamentally change with his second album Fremd im eigenen Land, even if the debate about the right way to deal with national identity, which was mainly triggered by the single NDW 2005, has lost some of its momentum. However, the rapper is still very polarizing and doesn't mince his words in his rhymes this time either.
Two years after his debut Neue Deutsche Welle, Fler risks a really big lip again with songs like "Ich bin Deutscher" or "Chefsache", which he recorded together with Aggro Berlin buddy Sido. Musically, he has found the right producers in Shuko, Desue, Djorkaeff and Goofiesmackerz to give his songs the right punch. With songs such as "Deutscha Bad Boy" or the powerful opener "Berlin", he impressively demonstrates that he can also deal with his ambivalent role in the public eye in an ironic way. Not every line that is delivered here has to be taken seriously. Fler deals with his identity as a "Deutscha" in many songs with quite different results. He stumbles on Fremd im eigenen Land especially when he deals with more interpersonal topics such as "Alles was ich brauch" or "Mein Mädchen", which are very thin and transparent lyrically. Despite these minor drawbacks, Fler's second album does not stand still. And given the unsatisfactory state of the German hip-hop scene in 2008, that means a lot.
