"City Lights" is a song written by Jack White and originally recorded for The White Stripes' album Get Behind Me Satan (but then forgotten). It was finally released on Jack White's compilation album Acoustic Recordings 1998–2016 (2016).
A music video for the song was directed by Michel Gondry.
"Michel Gondry surprises the world with this sweet, simple and downright brilliant new video for The White Stripes. Set entirely in Gondry's shower and done for the most part in a single take, the video shows him drawing visualisations of the song's lyrics onto the condensation forming on the shower's glass door, trying to make a picture make sense before it fades away to be replaced by the next set of drawings. It's a wonderful stream of consciousness (or should that be steam of consciousness?) video that reunites one of the best artist/director combos of the early Noughts - albeit completely without the knowledge of said artist, as Third Man Records revealed in a statement they released with the video. 'Third Man Records is pleased to share the genius surprise gift they received from their friend Michel Gondry. On his own and without anyone's knowledge, the legendary filmmaker shot a video for City Lights,' which he sent them the other night." (David Knight, Promonews)
