“Land of Hope and Dreams” was first introduced on the E Street Band reunion tour back in 1999, and at this point feels firmly ensconced in the Springsteen canon — it’s not for nothing that Springsteen Nation has adopted the lyric “faith will be rewarded” as its unofficial motto, especially come ticket-buying time.
Still, if inclusion of a studio version here sounded like an odd choice, particularly given the minimal ESB participation on Wrecking Ball, all doubts are erased when Clarence Clemons’ saxophone blares through your speakers, just as Springsteen extols the “bells of freedom ringin.’” That moment, coming on the heels of the restrained rising-up of “Rocky Ground,” serves in a way as the album’s climax, fostering a feeling of despair turning into faith, even through tears.
