"Never There" is the first single from Cake's third album Prolonging the Magic. The song spent 3 weeks at #1 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart surpassing "The Distance" as the band's highest-charting single (#4), but it did not achieve the breakthrough pop success of "The Distance" and it charted higher on the other charts making the song still their most popular and most successful to date as their signature song, but "Never There" was the band's first song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 78 since "The Distance" failed to do due to the rules of a commercial single before December 1998 which that song never issues, but it hit #35 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart where "Never There" charted less airplay and charted lower there at number 43 where the song originally did not chart on the actual chart also because of no commercial but it bought the song up to number 78 after December 1998 when the rules were changed.
The lyrics are from the viewpoint of a lover who is frustrated that, while his beloved claims to love him back, her actions indicate that she does not really care about him.
The song can be heard in the Friends episode "The One Where Rachel Smokes".
