"Pictures of Matchstick Men" is the first hit single from Status Quo, released on January 5, 1968.
The song reached number seven on the UK singles chart, number eight on Canada and number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was their only hit single in the US. Originally. It was intended that the B-side of the single, "Gentleman Joe's Sidewalk Cafe", should be the A-side.
There are two versions of the song, one in stereo and one in mono, which have major differences. The mono version, which was the original single version, has a wah-wah guitar in the interlude between the verses, while the stereo version does not have this.
The song opens with a simple guitar tone that plays a riff on four notes, before bass, rhythm guitar, drums and vocals come in. "Pictures of Matchstick Men" is one of several songs from the late 1960s that use a phasing effect.
