Honky Tonk is an instrumental written by Billy Butler, Bill Doggett, Clifford Scott and Shep Shepherd. In 1956, Doggett released it on a two-part single. On the Billboard pop charts, it peaked at number two for three weeks. It was a number one R&B single, spending thirteen non-consecutive weeks at the number one spot. In fact, "Honky Tonk" was the biggest R&B single of 1956.
There's a "Part One" and a "Part Two". Together they are about 5:42 in length.
It became Bill Doggett's signature piece. As one of the basic tunes in the R&B and rock and roll repertoire, it went on to be recorded by many instrumental groups.
The group The Beach Boys included it on their 1963 album Surfin' USA.
