Why does this have to be so difficult. I should be able to upload png and I should be able to upload any image dimension larger than some minimum. Why put so much work on the contributors when technology can handle these mundane tasks?

The reason is to keep things standard. I batch resize all my images before upload personally.
We don't support PNG because it takes so much bandwidth sorry.
