The Tower: A Brief Journey in English-Language Music
The Tower was an English-language band led by Boudewijn de Groot, who served as the lead vocalist and guitarist. During its brief existence, the band underwent two distinct lineups.
In 1968, The Tower debuted with their first single, featuring the tracks In Your Life and Slow Motion Mind. Both songs were written by De Groot, with Linda Van Dijk co-writing Slow Motion Mind. The lineup for this single included Eelco Gelling (known from Cuby and the Blizzards) on guitar, Jan Hollestelle on bass, Jay Baar (formerly of Q65) on drums, and Herman Deinum (later of Blues Dimension and Cuby and the Blizzards) on keyboard.
In 1969, The Tower released their second single, featuring Captain Decker and Steps into Space, co-written by De Groot and Simon Vinkenoog. This release marked a significant lineup change. Eelco Gelling remained on guitar, and Boudewijn de Groot continued as the lead vocalist and guitarist. The new members included John Schuursma (from Rob Hoeke R&B) on guitar, Willem Schoone (also from Rob Hoeke R&B) on bass, Hans Jansen on Hammond organ and piano, and Cees Kranenburg Jr. (previously of The Jumping Jewels) on drums.
