Lothar Koch (* July 1, 1935 in Velbert; † March 16, 2003 in Salzburg) was a prominent German oboist, considered one of the greatest interpreters of his instrument in the 20th century.

Education and career

Koch studied at the Folkwang-Hochschule in Essen with Professor Hermann Töttcher. After his studies, he became the principal oboist with the Philharmonic Orchestra in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1956. Just one year later, in 1957, he was appointed to the same position with the Berlin Philharmonic under the direction of Herbert von Karajan, where he remained active until the 1990s.

Ensemble activities

In 1961, Koch, together with other musicians from the Berlin Philharmonic, founded the Philharmonic Soloists Berlin. He performed with this ensemble in various chamber music formations. In 1978, he founded the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Ensemble, with which he performed at the Salzburg Festival, among other venues.

Teaching positions

From 1961 onwards, Koch held a lectureship at the Städtische Konservatorium Berlin. He not only gave master classes but was also active in the Orchestra Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic, founded in 1972. In 1990, he received a guest professorship at the Salzburg Mozarteum, where he was appointed Professor of Oboe in 1991. He also taught at the International Summer Academy Mozarteum Salzburg until 1996.

Artistic significance

As a soloist and chamber musician, Lothar Koch made concert tours all over the world and left behind an extensive discography. His repertoire includes solo concertos by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Richard Strauss, and Hans-Jürgen von Bose, as well as numerous chamber music works. His oboe playing was characterized by an expressive, singing tone and rhythmic precision, which earned him the reputation of a world-class musician.
