Walter Lang (born May 13, 1961 in Schwäbisch Gmünd) is a German pianist. He played in the Rick Hollander Quartet and in the Walter Lang Trio and in the trio ELF.
Life :
Lang comes from a musical family. Already his father and grandfather played the accordion and piano. He studied jazz piano and composition at the Berklee School of Music in Boston and graduated from the Amsterdam School of Arts. In 1988, Walter Lang co-founded the renowned and internationally very successful Rick Hollander Quartet. The quartet won the "Europ 'Jazz Contest" in Hoeilaart in Belgium in 1990 and has released numerous albums.
Since 1999 he leads his own Walter Lang Trio. Until 2007, Nicolas played Thys on bass and Rick Hollander on drums. Their publications include z. "Walter Lang Trio Plays Charles Chaplin" (1999), "Across the Universe" (2002), "Lotus Blossom" (2003) and "Softly As in a Morning Sunrise" (2005). The Japanese jazz magazine Swing Journal awarded the CD The Sound Of A Rainbow (2005) the Best Sounding CD Award and the CD Romantic Road the Gold Disc Award. The trio has been touring for years, especially in Japan.
In 2008, the Walter Lang Trio was reorganized: Thomas Markusson from Gothenburg, Sweden plays double bass, and the new drummer is Sebastian Merk from Berlin. Eurasia is their first joint CD as a trio; she was released on the Tokyo label M & I.
Since 2005 he continues to play with Gerwin Eisenhauer on drums and Sven Faller on double bass in trio ELF. The first CD ELF was released in 2006 by Enja Records and was a great success. In September 2008 he released another album of this trio, 746. His current projects include Trio ELF and the Walter Lang Trio, his quintet Walter Lang's Romance, Daktarimba and a duo with saxophonist Lee Konitz. In October 2010 Elfland released the third studio album by Trio ELF under Enja Records. 2013 was followed by a live album of the band titled Amsterdam (live).
Lang played with other musicians such as James Moody, Chico Freeman, Don Menza, Lisa Wahlandt, Stefanie Schlesinger, Jenny Evans, Harald Rüschenbaum, Jason Seizer, Johannes Herrlich, Thomas Faist, Beate Kittsteiner, Philipp Weiss, Dusko Goykovich and Shinya Fukumori.
In January 2013, Lang's first book entitled "Eleven Impressions for Piano" was published by music boox Verlag. These are 11 compositions arranged by Lang especially for solo piano. He is also a lecturer for piano at the music college Regensburg and lecturer for rhythm section at the Landes-Jugendjazzorchester Bayern.
