Jan Garbarek Group :
In parallel to Jarrett's quartet and his sideman activity, Garbarek continues his work with a personal quartet, based on classical instrumentation: saxophone, piano or guitar, double bass, drums. This quartet is sometimes called the Jan Garbarek Group from 1978. If the base of the group is a quartet, it sometimes evolves towards a trio (Eventyr, 1980), or a quintet (Photo with ..., 1978). The musicians of this group regularly change, especially the harmonic section which is held successively by John Taylor (piano and organ) and Bill Connors (guitar) on Places (1977) and Photo with ... (1978), John Abercrombie (guitar ) for Eventyr (1980), Bill Frisell (guitar) for Paths, Prints (1981) and Wayfarer (1982).
In 1978, German bassist Eberhard Weber, who had previously worked with Garbarek on albums by Ralph Towner (Solstice 1975, and Sound and Shadows, 1977), joined the group and participated in the album Photo with .... Weber is an element of stability of the Jan Garbarek Group which he remained bassist until 2007.
