Drukwerk: An Iconic Dutch Pop Band

Drukwerk is a Dutch pop band from Amsterdam, widely known for their hits in the 1980s. The band is led by the charismatic singer Harrie Slinger, easily recognizable by his iconic red cap. Slinger, who has his roots in community work, began his musical career with the group performing at protest and squat demonstrations. During this time, Drukwerk gained local fame with their song "Ik Verveel Me Zo (In Amsterdam-Noord)" ("I'm So Bored (In Amsterdam-Noord)").

Formation and Breakthrough

Drukwerk was founded in 1978 by Harry Slinger, Ton Coster, Joop May, and Hans Witteveen. Over the years, the band's lineup has changed frequently, but Slinger, Coster, and May remained constant members. Their early songs were protest anthems against the closure of a youth center in Amsterdam-Noord, nuclear energy in Kalkar, and songs supporting refugees and squatters.

In 1981, Drukwerk recorded their first LP, "Drukwerk," after being approached by producer Coen van Vrijberghe de Coningh, who asked them to create demos for EMI. The single "Je Loog Tegen Mij" ("You Lied to Me"), a cover of Door Mekaar's "Terug van Troje" ("Back from Troy"), became a number 1 hit. During the early '80s, Drukwerk released several hits, including "Wat Dom" ("How Dumb") and "Schijn 'n Lichtje Op Mij" ("Shine a Little Light on Me"). The band also opened Café Drukwerk on the Singel in Amsterdam.

Declining Popularity and Comeback

In the late '80s, the popularity of Dutch-language music waned, and Drukwerk struggled to produce new hits. The band shifted their focus to theater performances and temporarily disbanded in 1990, with singer Harrie Slinger pursuing a solo career. In 2003, the Volendam band Next One formed a new Drukwerk for a tour celebrating the band's 25th anniversary.

After more than 25 years, Drukwerk released new material in 2013 with the album "Tegen Beter Weten In" ("Against Better Judgment"), featuring a new lineup that included Slinger's son, Bram. Today, Drukwerk continues to perform in venues across the Netherlands, keeping their iconic music alive.
