Florence Leontine Mary Welch was born on August 28, 1986 in London in the district of Camberwell. She completed her secondary education at Alleyn's School in Dulwich, London. During this period, the girl plays the guitar in a punk group, The Toxic Cockroaches. She is diagnosed with dyslexia and also suffers from dysmetria, she also suffers from insomnia. She then continued her studies at the Camberwell School of Art, but quickly dropped out to devote herself to music.

As a child, Florence Welch began singing in church before transforming in her words into "a chorister who has gone horribly and desperately wrong". She grew up listening to the White Stripes, her favorite band, as well as Kate Bush. Her teachers often reprimand her for singing all the time. His family then owns a collection of vinyls kept in a huge wooden chest. Young, Florence and her father enjoy riding on it and then dancing to songs from Love, The Incredible String Band, The Smiths and The Velvet Underground. Florence's mom listens to Tom Jones and The Monkees. The musician claims that her way of singing was influenced by these artists. When she turned 13, her mother moved in with her neighbor and her three children. The singer says: “We get along very well now, but it was a nightmare back then. I used to stay in my room to dance ”.

Florence Welch's fascination with terror and gloomy atmospheres intensifies after the death of her grandparents a few years apart. At the age of 10, she witnesses the deterioration of her grandfather's condition, while her grandmother, an art historian, will end her life 4 years later. She writes metaphorical songs, "stories of consequences with strange moral problems". His inspirations are diverse. The song Dog Days Are Over was inspired by an installation, Kiss With A Fist is about "giving as well as you get".

The young woman, who calls herself a real geek, loves to read. Since December 2008, she has lived in Camberwell, a district in south London.
