Rainywood consisted of Rachel Hughes and Nathan Shineywater, along with a few other contributers. The act's first gig was a benefit for the Alabama Green Party that drew 15 people. Among the small group of writers, artists, and musicians living in Birmingham, however, was a gentleman named Will Oldham, aka Bonnie "Prince" Billy. Oldham took a liking to Rainywood and invited the group on tour with him. Rainywood recorded a self-titled CDEP in 2001 and released it in 2002. That same year they also shared a split single on Palace Records with Will Oldham titled "Cornflower Blue"/"Brother Warrior". Both songs are Kate Wolf covers. Hughes and Shineywater would soon change their name to Brightblack and release another EP entitled "Ala.Cali.Tucky" in 2004 on Galaxia. In 2005 they would sign to Matador Records and again change their name to the extended moniker of "Brightblack Morning Light" and release two critically acclaimed albums.
