Gülşen (her full name is Gülşen Bayraktar) was born on 29 May 1976 in Istanbul. After high school studies she attended the Turkish Classical Music Department of Istanbul Technical University.
Her first album, "Be Adam" (Oh Man!) which she released in 1996, gave her a good jumpstart, and her second album, "Erkeksen" (If You Are A Man), came three years afterwards, in 1999. Her third album, "Şimdi" (Now), was released in 2002, which did not attract many fans. Some of her video clips have been censored by the Radio and Television Censoring Agency, RTÜK, and several TV stations have been fined for showing the clips.
In 2006, she released "Yurtta Aşk, Cihanda Aşk" (Love At Home, Love In The World), a title which is a take on the famous motto of the founder of the Turkish republic, Atatürk, which runs as follows: "Peace At Home, Peace In the World". This is a much more revolutionary and bellicose title than it actually looks, since although there have been numerous movements which championed substituting love for war, nobody has yet offered a subtitution of love for peace (except until 2006, the release of the album by Gulsen, that is). Her latest album is "Ama Bir Farkla", released in 2007.
