Suffocation ist eine amerikanische Death-Metal-Band, die 1988 in Long Island, New York, gegründet wurde. Die Band besteht aus Sänger Frank Mullen, den Gitarristen Terrance Hobbs und Guy Marchais, Schlagzeuger Dave Culross und Bassist Derek Boyer. Mit ihrem Debütalbum Effigy of the Forgotten aus dem Jahr 1991 wurden Suffocation zu einem der bekanntesten Vertreter des Death Metal und schufen eine Blaupause für das Genre in den 1990er Jahren. Suffocation haben bis 2013 sieben Studioalben veröffentlicht.

Der rohe Death-Metal-Stil der Band verwendet gutturalen Gesang mit einem heruntergestimmten Gitarrensound, schnellen komplexen Gitarrenriffs und Schlagzeugspiel sowie einem ausgefeilten Sinn für Songwriting.
