Gli Epica, precedentemente noti come Sahara Dust, sono una band symphonic metal olandese nata a Reuver, frazione di Beesel nel Limburgo, fondata nel 2002 da Mark Jansen, ex chitarrista degli After Forever. Il nome deriva dall'omonimo disco del 2003 dei Kamelot.

Nati come band symphonic metal con sfumature gothic, gli Epica hanno in seguito incorporato nel proprio sound forti influenze death metal, tanto che Mark Jansen ha ammesso che molti li definiscono "symphonic death metal". Lo stile della band presenta anche attitudini molto vicine al progressive metal che sono state nettamente potenziate negli ultimi album. In particolare, l'ultimo album della band è decisamente orientato al prog death.
Nella musica della band sono riscontrabili anche altre influenze, tra cui melodic death metal, symphonic black metal e technical thrash metal.
Occasionalmente, gli Epica inseriscono nelle loro canzoni anche elementi arabi/mediorientali, elettronici/industrial, power e ambient.
