Artist Biography
Available in: gb icon flag icon
Mt Eden (formerly Mt Eden Dubstep) is a New Zealand Dubstep production duo consisting of Jesse Cooper and Harley Rayner. Their most well-known songs are "Sierra Leone", their remix of Sarah McLachlan's "Silence" and "Still Alive" which is currently their most viewed song on YouTube with 33 million views, however, previous uploads of Sierra Leone reached over 29 million views before being removed.
They started gaining popularity when their bootleg recording "Sierra Leone" went viral on YouTube in 2009. They currently have over 90 million combined video views and 158 thousand subscribers on YouTube, as well as 3 thousand "likes" on their Facebook page.
Cooper and Rayner met when they were about 13 years old and started making mixtapes on the weekends. At first, they mostly made Hip hop music but decided to instead make Dubstep after they heard ] and Skream at the New Zealand festival Phat09 and had their "minds blown" by the young genre. They also started making DnB around the same time. Their first success was the bootleg recording "Sierra Leone", which Mt Eden uploaded and posted on their Myspace page, but it didn't go viral until a fan posted the track on YouTube.
In 2010 Rayner's brother suggested he make a page for the duo to post music on. He called the page "MtEdenDubstep7859" because they lived in Mt Eden. That was when Rayner and Cooper decided to call themselves "Mt Eden dubstep", later changing their name to just simply "Mt Eden" Many of their songs they posted on their YouTube page received millions of views over time, their fanbase started growing rapidly.
