Foi membro da banda The Commodores e vendeu mundialmente mais de cem milhões de discos em sua carreira solo.

Em 2017, foi condecorado na 40º Honrarias Anuais do Centro Kennedy (do inglês: Annual Kennedy Center Honors), um dos prêmios mais prestigiados da cultura norte americana, recebida também por Glória Estefan e outros.
