32/66: JONAH
SCRIPTURE OF DEDICATION: Jonah 2:1-9
"Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish's belly, And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me. Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple. The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head. I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O Lord my God. When my soul fainted within me I remembered the Lord: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple. They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord."
In our lowest moments, He can lift us up, and He will if we look to Him, though it will always be how and when He sees fit. When we're called a certain way, we should obey, lest He has to direct us Himself by whatever means are in your surroundings. For the prophet Jonah, it was a whale. For us nowadays, that belly of hell can be all manner of strife or hardship. The ultimate captivity of sin being a major snare to many of us, so grateful are we that we don't need to become perfect and hone in our works to be saved.
Jonah's prayer in this chapter shows how simply calling on the Lord and identifying that salvation is of Him, that is of grace and by our faith of calling on Him, not only was Jonah saved bodily but he was given the chance to immediately take back up his discipleship by which he was called to in the first place. Our salvation and identifying where it comes from is not tied to our successes and our achievements; He paid the price in his perfect sinless life and death on the cross. For Jonah, the simple faith that the Lord was who He said He was counted for righteousness of that very same kind of faith we can have today in Jesus.
