56/66: TITUS
SCRIPTURE OF DEDICATION: Titus 3:3-7
"For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life."
Don't miss what this verse is saying. So many people look at the beginning of the chapter and let their hearts sink; seeing the sins that many of us commit listed is never a good feeling, especially when we spot the one or two or maybe even all of them that we've walked in. This is not teaching that you need to learn how to become holy, but rather, rejoice, as He did the work so that your regeneration can be abundantly poured out onto you for the rest of your life. We make an active attempt every day in the Christian life to live up to discipleship, but, when we fall off that horse, we aren't left in the dust. We are always helped back up. Such is one of the many glories of eternal life.
I didn't have hope at all in my catholic upbringing because I wasn't told anything about assurance of salvation. It was taught to us as sin to believe with all our hearts that we would be accepted into heaven by our faith alone. This is the literal Gospel. Belief alone is what saves, whereas the importance of our works is still very real: to be used of God, to be right with God, to be a witness unto the others of the world for God. But the idea that our own works of righteousness "earn" us a spot in heaven? This is foolishness. We cannot earn heaven. We can only receive access by His grace, which is no mystery but is plainly spelled out in the Bible: look and live, repent from not believing on the Son of God and start believing on Him alone, and that's it: you're saved.
