One thing is for damn sure: you never forget you’re listening to DJ Khaled. The hip-hop figure’s larger than life stance extends to his music – new album ‘God Did’ is smeared in his cypher, but it’s more than that. This record, down to its very DNA, is pure, undiluted DJ Khaled: chaotic, loud, brash, and unapologetic, it’s hard to truly love but impossible to ignore.
As usual, ‘God Did’ is testament to the power of DJ Khaled’s contact list, his platinum-gilded rolodex. Literally everybody is on here – from newcomers to all-out icons, each track peppered with talent. Like Kanye? Partial to Eminem? Well, Khaled has them both on the same track. Is that even a good idea? Isn’t this just curatorial overkill bordering on ego-centric largesse? Maybe, but it’s also incredibly entertaining.
The highs, curiously, come from artists with the most to prove. Nardo Wick and Don Toliver deliver two standout verses, and their placement here does the newcomers no harm at all. Conversely, the most lacklustre moments are often handled by artist’s with the longest resumes – Drake’s spots are disappointing, a reminder of how often Aubrey’s best work is kept aside for his own records.
Future and SZA combine on album standout ‘BEAUTIFUL’, while Latto and City Girls – placing two toxic femme favourites on the same track, we see you DJ Khaled – combine on the punchy, irresistible ‘BILLS PAID’.

DJ Khaled – God Did

It doesn’t always land, however. ‘Juice WRLD DID’ is a short piece, a fond tribute to the late rapper; the actual recording is insubstantial though, while smothering Juice WRLD’s delivery in his ‘DJ KHALED!!!!’ cypher isn’t the most subtle of moves.
Ultimately, ‘GOD DID’ is a record of fireworks, but few surprises. The songs kept succinct, punchy, and direct; there’s no house production about-turns, no moments of revelation, just sheer, unadulterated Khaled. It’s like being strapped in to a rollercoaster – at points its exhilarating, at others terrifying, and by the end you’re eager for it to be over. In leaning on his hip-hop roots DJ Khaled re-asserts his role as rap’s best-connected figure, and that’s testimony both to his effervescent personality and his unrelenting creativity. That it doesn’t all land almost misses the point: it’s DJ Khaled!!!!
