"Emancipation" ist das 19. Studioalbum und erste Dreifach-Studioalbum von Prince. Es erschien am 19. November 1996 bei dem Label "N.P.G. Records / E.M.I. Records" und ist damit das erste Prince-Album, das nicht beim Label Warner Bros. Records veröffentlicht wurde. Das Album erschien nur vier Monate nach dem Vorgängeralbum "Chaos And Disorder" und enthält insgesamt 36 Songs, darunter die Singles "Betcha By Golly Wow!" und "The Holy River". Die drei CDs bestehen jeweils aus 12 Songs und sind je genau 60 Minuten lang. Das Albumcover gestaltete der Fotograf und Art-Director Steve Parke. Die Albumaufnahmen fanden zwischen Januar 1995 und Oktober 1996 in den Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen statt. "Emancipation" ist ein Konzeptalbum, da Prince mit dem Album sowohl die Freiheit und Unabhängigkeit von Warner Bros. Records als auch die Heirat mit der Tänzerin Mayte Garcia, die am 14. Februar 1996 seine Frau wurde, feiert und zelebriert. Insbesondere die Songs auf der zweiten CD widmete Prince seiner Ehefrau und dem noch ungeborenen Kind des Paares. Prince machte ungewöhnlich viel Werbung für das Album, so trat er in mehreren US-amerikanischen Talkshows auf. Diese Auftritte wurden allerdings durch den Tod seines Kindes eine Woche nach seiner Geburt und einen Monat vor der Veröffentlichung des Albums stark getrübt. "Emancipation" ist das erste Album, auf dem Prince Songs anderer Künstler neu aufnahm. Insgesamt finden sich vier Coverversionen auf dem Album. "Emancipation" erreichte in den amerikanischen Billboard Charts Platz 11 und wurde in den USA ca. 700.000 Mal verkauft, wodurch es Platin-Status erlangte. In Deutschland wurde das Album 85.000 Mal verkauft und erreichte Platz 21 der deutschen Album-Charts.

Writing the book for the young turks of a reborn, historically hip r&b--three disks and hours of liberation, hubris, divine superfluity, and proof that he can come all night even if by six in the morning it takes too long and he never actually gets hard. Yet although there's not a bad track in the 36, I bet he himself would have trouble remembering them all, and hear nothing that tops the Delfonics and Stylistics covers, which latter wasn't the debut single for nothing and flopped anyway. Great grooves abound, however. As does great singing. Harmonies too. Did I mention that the horns are surprisingly cool? And hey, the little guy has a sense of humor.
