Left to their own devices, Kiwi siblings Georgia and Caleb Nott (aka Broods) seize the chance to play; breaking free from the carefully constructed monotone of dark wave for a kaleidoscopic third album, their first for Neon Gold/Atlantic after being dropped by Capitol. The album's their first single, "Peach," is zany pop that veers happily into different sonic territories, exposing emotional troughs and reaching for euphoric face-melts. It showcases the duo's gift for infectious upbeat melodies without forsaking broody temperaments. "Peach" is also remix-ready for full-blown dance-floor bangers or quiet, dystopian realities.
"Why Do You Believe In Me?" hews close to their strengths-harmonies, just the right balance of electronica, and lyrics that belie their insecurities. They've found new textures, colors, and ways to deliver their darker instincts: be it in the form of an old timey ballad like "Life After," the '90s Deee-Lite groove and baggy pants vibe of "Old Dog," or the rambunctious, bass-led "Hospitalized."
They even try role reversal-Caleb sings lead vocals on "Too Proud" while Georgia played all the instruments in the studio that day. The multiplicity serves them well on this satisfying effort.
