The Cavalera brothers, Max and Igor, are renowned for their undisputed contributions to metal. Founding fathers of the revolutionary Sepultura before branching off into acclaimed individual projects, 2007 saw the once rival siblings reunite to form Cavalera Conspiracy.
Never renowned for subtlety, the initial breaths in ‘Psychosis’ see the Cavalera Conspiracy thrashing through any and all platitudes, as well as bypassing formalities, with a true Cavalera Conspiracy opener, “Insane”. An apt title, capturing the chaotic, whipping, whirlwind riffing, that envelops the tenacious vocals Max delivers, all married to Igor’s relentless drums. If “Insane” kicks everything into gear, “Terror Tactics” ups the gauge and the ante, delivering a five-minute, unrelenting, top class onslaught.
The format continues right through. Unquestionably one of the more interesting metal vocalists, Max Cavalera’s blending of guttural stylings with tribal sounds, often creating a hybrid of the two with a rap-like, spit ball delivery, still remains as raw, fun, and energizing as ever it was. Tracks such as “Hellfire,” and “Excruciating,” see the legendary vocalist continue to push, and transcend, genre stereotypes. But if Calavera’s voices rains, “Psychosis’” zero bullshit ensemble bring the thunder. Long-time friend and guitar connoisseur, Marc Rizzo, as well as Igor on drums, and a currently unconfirmed bassist, shine on tracks like the multi-layered, blast beat belter, “Spectral War,” the grooving installment that is “Impalement Execution,” and the deeply moving instrumental, “Psychosis,” a hybrid of 80’s and ambient, with just a smattering of borderline prog.
With its wild, reckless, exuberance, ‘Psychosis’ is full throttle, thrasher designed to rattle the timid and shake even the most die-hard of fans. If, by the time the record has finished spinning, you haven’t stomped a hole through your bedroom floor, slap it on repeat and take the ride all over again. For ‘Psychosis’ says what it means, and means what it says, with the Cavalera Conspiracy taking no prisoners in a musical rush that will leave you breathless.
