This compilation brings together some selections from his years with The Babys together with material from his solo work through 1986. The collection seems promising at first, but ultimately falls short of being completely satisfying. ESSENTIAL might have lived up to its title a bit more with the inclusion of such hits as “Isn’t It Time” or “Everything I Think Of You, which are inexplicably absent here. John’s smooth and soulful vocals sell the better tracks, but too much of this material is bland and uninteresting pop/rock. Too few GREAT tracks to sustain my interest for long.
