Though it's an extra volume of the Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the '80s series, New Wave Women features surprisingly few repeats from the other volumes. Laurie Anderson's "O Superman (For Massenet)," Josie Cotton's "Johnny, Are You Queer?," and Romeo Void's "Never Say Never" all appeared on previous editions of the series, but the majority of the album's tracks did not. However, the majority of the album's tracks are also somewhat predictable, something that the rest of the Just Can't Get Enough series managed to avoid. The Bangles' "Walk Like an Egyptian," the Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)," and the Pretenders' "Brass in Pocket" are all indisputably new wave classics and sound great here, but can also be found on lots of other new wave compilations. Animotion's "Obsession," Bow Wow Wow's "I Want Candy," and the Divinyls' "I Touch Myself" are also good, but common, choices; fortunately, the Pandoras' "In and Out of My Life (In a Day)," the Belle Stars' "Sign of the Times," and Altered Images' "I Could Be Happy" reflect the quirkiness that made the rest of the Just Can't Get Enough Series as much of a discovery as it was a retrospective. Though it's a strong collection of female-fronted new wave singles, New Wave Women is still slightly disappointing, if only because so much of it has been heard on so many other albums.
