Just about any type of music -- be it rap, country, reggae, salsa or Algerian rai -- has its share of artists who never achieved huge commercial success but attracted an incredibly passionate cult following. In the metal scene of the late '80s and early '90s, one such band was Pigmy Love Circus. Their loud, raucous, bluesy, over-the-top blend of metal and punk didn't come even close to Judas Priest-like sales, but their small group of cult followers were absolutely crazy about them -- and those cult followers will be delighted by the Pigmy reunion that takes place on The Power of Beef, which is their first new album since 1992. This CD picks up where Pigmy's two previous albums left off, and the band's 2004 lineup -- which consists of lead singer Michael Savage (not to be confused with the far-right talk show host), drummer Danny Carey (of Tool fame), guitarist Peter Fletcher and bassist E. Shepherd Stevenson -- mines the same metal/punk waters that Pigmy was mining in 1989 and 1990. Stylistically, nothing has changed for Pigmy, whose material is as rude, crude and delightfully infectious as ever. Pigmy Love Circus never claimed to be politically correct -- actually, they're the exact opposite of politically correct, and the title The Power of Beef is an obvious jab at the animal rights crowd (who are the left's version of anti-abortionists). Not that The Power of Beef is an album of serious sociopolitical messages; the Pigmy Love Circus of 2004, like the Pigmy Love Circus of the late '80s and early '90s, is nothing more than an exercise in outrageous, decadent fun -- and anyone who bothers to be offended by any of their twisted lyrics really needs to get a life. It's great to see Pigmy Love Circus raising hell again.
