User Album Review
In a review by Max Brandl for the e-zine Laut.de, Jung, brutal, gutaussehend received two out of a possible five rating points and was therefore rated significantly lower than Kollegah's previous solo albums Alphagene and Kollegah. In comparison to these, his contributions on the collabo album are "almost disastrous". Apart from the beats to Schwarzgeld, Mitternacht and Die Härtesten Im Land, the background music for the tracks was rated negatively. Overall, the collaboration between Farid Bang and Kollegah works poorly: "Not that the two take turns stealing the show - unfortunately no: both forfeit their respective strengths." Brandl also criticized that Kollegah's arrogant performance was gradually giving way to boredom. Farid Bang is irritating and embarrassing, as he attacks numerous German rappers by name, including Samy Deluxe in particular. Despite all the negative criticism, Kollegah shows in tracks such as Banger and Boss or Die Härtesten im Land that he is still one of the best rappers in Germany and that it makes more sense for both Farid Bang and Kollegah to release a solo album in 2010.
The album received a good rating from the editors of Juice magazine. The album combines the "best of two underworlds". Kollegah's verse in the title Gangbanger was particularly praised, as it is technically mature in a way that is rare in German rap. On the other hand, Farid Bang's verse with Doubletime, Billy13's guest contribution and the lack of variety in the arrangements were rated rather negatively. In summary, however, the album is "one of the best albums in the first half of the German rap year 2009." The editorial team thus gives it a rating of four and a half out of a possible six "crowns".
The editors of the Rap.de website noted that the lack of variety on Jung, brutal, gutaussehend can also be seen as a positive, as it could just as easily be described as "uncompromising" and therefore contrary to the zeitgeist. The tracks Banger and Boss as well as Sonnenbank Pimps are positively emphasized, as the two musicians rap "Doubletime" in the latter. Both the tracks Alphamassaka, Flaschen auf den Türsteher and Crime Time as well as the contribution by Billy13, whose voice does not fit into the context of the album, are rated negatively by the editors. In terms of his "flows and comparisons", Farid Bang sounds a lot like Kollegah on the release. Kollegah raps successful, entertaining verses, but cannot reach the high level of his previous albums.
Three out of a possible five rating points were awarded to the collabo album by hip-hop magazine Backspin. With little thematic variety, the two rappers fulfill the expectations placed on the release in advance. Kollegah and Farid Bang manage to "entertain at a high level" despite the limited content. Backspin attributes this to the humorous comparisons. The magazine lists the three best tracks as Gangbanger, Die Härtesten im Land and Jung, brutal, gutaussehend. Finally, the review explains that listeners should not take the album titles too seriously. At the Hiphop.de Awards 2009, Kollegah and Farid Bang received an award in the "Best Collaboration" category for Jung, brutal, gutaussehend.
