Nightswim is a mess, but a pleasant one. Synths stutter and clash, a drum machine crunches along and distorted harmonies twist around Blade Runner robotic beeps. Wafting over proceedings, Addamo’s sleek pipes supply order to the lush chaos below. Sometimes it’s not enough, and more laidback cuts like ‘Nightswim’ – which relies on a thick synth hop to move it along – become lazy and directionless. The more up-tempo ‘Hurricane’ and ‘Diamonds In Her Eyes’ work better; the punchy drum machine adding the necessary verve. The most interesting work comes with the handy flashes of dance-pop experimentation: ‘Ivory’ shudders with phased vocals and ‘Saltwater’ works the synth delay for the ultimate New Wave tribute.
