All the material on Songs from White Christmas (And Other Yuletide Favorites) was recorded in the mid-'50s, when Rosemary Clooney was at something of a peak. Her voice was supple, her popularity high, and she was working with such luminaries as Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington. Here, she doesn't flex her jazz muscles, which is only appropriate since holiday music sounds best when it's delivered straight. And Songs from White Christmas is certainly delivered straight, complete with lush orchestras and sweet arrangements. That approach results in a lovely, warm-hearted Christmas album that's an ideal choice not only for fans of Clooney, but also fans of traditional and easy-listening pop from the '50s.
