Like the food that is so lovingly prepared in the film Tortilla Soup, the music on the soundtrack is a feast for the senses. The soundtrack creates a palpable connection between the taste of Latin food and music, so much so that the album contains recipes cards. The soundtrack is a gumbo of Latin styles, from a traditional Cuban tune by Eliades Ochoa to the retro punk of Venezuelan rockers Los Amigos Invisibles. A highlight is Bebel Gilberto's breezy bossa nova track "Sem Contençao." Lila Downs also provides a charming and quirky bilingual version of the standard "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps (Quizás, Quizás, Quizás)." The album could have done without the bland score excerpt by Bill Conti, but for the most part the soundtrack to Tortilla Soup is a mouth-watering mix. ~ Jon Azpiri Amigos Invisibles,E. Ochoa,B.
