Dub music is an altered form of reggae in which the vocal parts are either entirely of partly removed from the mix, and the bass and drum parts are made prominent. Burning Spear (a.k.a. Winston Rodney), was an early proponent of this technique, starting with GARVEY'S GHOST, a remix version of the critically acclaimed 1975 landmark album MARCUS GARVEY. LIVING DUB, VOLUME THREE is the 1997 remix of 1995's RASTA BUSINESS. As has been the case with the previous volumes of this series, Burning Spear strips away most of the vocals and focuses on the rhythms while coloring the mix with minimal amounts of reverb. An upbeat, joyous mood permeates VOLUME THREE thanks to the liberal use of brassy-sounding horns on "Smart Dub" and a wicked bass line that shoots through "Chanting Home." Elsewhere, Spear's use of minimal chanting by background singers Carol Wilson and Sharon Gordon contributes to the album's lighter vibe, particularly on such numbers as "Burning Dub," "Investigation," and the lover's rock of "Stand." Recorded at Grove Recording Studio, Ocho Rios, St. Ann, Jamaica. The Burning Band: Winston Rodney (vocals, percussion); Lenford Richards (guitar, funde); Lenyal "Shayar" Jarrett (guitar); Mark Wilson (saxophone); James Smith (trumpet); Charles Dickey (trombone); Jay Noel (synthesizer); Paul Beckford (bass); Nelson Miller (drums, percussion, background vocals); Alvin Haughton (percussion).
