With Abba Agnetha Faltskog sold more records in her life than most artists could ever dream of. My Colouring Book didn't start life as an album; it was inspired by a scrapbook hobby that grew into a passion for the 1960s. Don't expect Abba-esque floor-fillers or pub-band crowd pleasers. Faltskog has taken, for the most part, less popular songs of the period and injected them with an ambience that could only come from a deep knowledge and understanding of the music, fashion and style of the 60s. Her voice sounds stronger and crisper than ever; this, combined with a mountain of grandiose string arrangements, makes for a strangely epic journey of easy listening.
"Love Me With All Your Heart" is filled with bombast and sugary-sweetness, drawing comparisons to the late, great Dusty Springfield. The sadly over-covered "Fly Me to the Moon" thankfully keeps the jazz vibe to a minimum, sticking to the big strings, guitar and vocal arrangement that dominates the whole feel of the album. My Colouring Book could easily have been rubbish, ploughing through a catalogue of songs that have been abused too many times, yet Faltskog manages to pull it off with style, grace and elegance.
