"Love Symbol" ist das 14. Studioalbum von Prince und das zweite Album mit seiner Begleitband "The New Power Generation". Es erschien am 2. Oktober 1992 bei dem Label Warner Bros. Records / Paisley Park Records und enthält 18 Songs, darunter die fünf Singles "Sexy M.F.", "My Name Is Prince", "7", "Damn U" und "The Morning Papers". Die Laufzeit des Albums beträgt 74 Minuten und 58 Sekunden. Das Albumcover gestalteten Jeff Gold und Greg Ross.
Die Albumaufnahmen fanden zwischen Mai 1991 und August 1992 in Hollywood und den Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen statt. Der Name des Albums ist eigentlich ein unaussprechbares Symbol, das eine Kombination aus dem Mars- und Venussymbol darstellt, und Prince zwischen dem 7. Juni 1993 und 16. Mai 2000 als Pseudonym anstatt eines Namens trug.
"Love Symbol" ist ein Konzeptalbum, da Prince eine Rahmenhandlung um die Songs des Albums herum konstruierte. Er nannte das Album eine "Phantasie-Rock-Seifenoper". Die von der Schauspielerin Kirstie Alley vorgetragenen Überleitungen zwischen den Songs sollen die Rahmenhandlung näher erläutern. Allerdings landete ein Großteil der geplanten Überleitungen nicht auf dem Album, da Prince den zuletzt geschriebenen Song "Eye Wanna Melt Wit U" unbedingt auf dem Album platzieren wollte. Da das Album nun mit einer Laufzeit von mehr als 80 Minuten nicht mehr auf eine CD gepasst hätte, strich Prince die meisten Überleitungen, wodurch der Sinn der Rahmenhandlung nicht mehr eindeutig nachzuvollziehen ist.
Zu fast allen Songs des Albums existieren Videoclips, die am 16. August 1994 als "3 Chains O' Gold Video Collection" auf VHS und Laserdisc veröffentlicht wurden. Die Videoclips sind in einem Handlungsstrang eingebettet, der die ursprüngliche Rahmenhandlung des Albums verständlicher beschreiben soll.
Das Album erreichte in den amerikanischen Billboard Charts Platz fünf und wurde in den USA 1,3 Million Mal verkauft, wodurch es Platin-Status erlangte. In Deutschland wurde das Album 210.000 Mal verkauft und erreichte Platz fünf der deutschen Album-Charts.

The unpronounceable The Artist Formally Known As Prince or Love Symbol Album was the second and last album Prince co-credited to the New Power Generation. Like the preceding Diamonds And Pearls album it takes in many musical genres, however for the Love Symbol Album Prince wrote all the songs and centred them around a theme of his relationship with a princess (played by Mayte).
This is Prince’s first album released under his record-breaking $100m five-,album contract with Warner Brothers. On the initial pressing of the CD the jewel case version is unusual, being embossed with a gold Prince love symbol, the unpronounceable name of the album, which Prince would later also adopt in replacement to his own birth name, due to an on-going dispute with Warner Brothers over the terms of Prince’s contract and the control it placed on his music. The Love Symbol Album was also released as a alternative gold slip-case limited edition. It is certified Platinum by the RIAA.
