"Sign "☮" The Times" ist das neunte Studioalbum und zweite Doppelalbum von Prince. Es ist außerdem das erste Album nach der Trennung von seiner Begleitband "The Revolution". "Sign "☮" The Times" erschien am 30. März 1987 bei dem Label Warner Bros. Records / Paisley Park Records und enthält 16 Songs, darunter die vier Singles "Sign "☮" The Times", "If I Was Your Girlfriend", "U Got The Look" und "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man". Die Laufzeit des Albums beträgt 79 Minuten und 48 Sekunden. Das Albumcover gestaltete Laura LiPuma.
Ursprünglich wollte Prince ein Dreifachalbum namens "Crystal Ball" mit 22 Songs veröffentlichen. Auf Drängen von Warner Bros. Records kürzte er das Album um sieben Songs, änderte die Reihenfolge der Stücke, und benannte das Album in "Sign "☮" The Times" um.
Die Aufnahmen zu "Sign "☮" The Times" fanden zwischen dem 15. März 1986 und 15. Januar 1987 in Chanhassen, Hollywood und Paris statt. Für vier Songs beschleunigte Prince mithilfe technischer Geräte seine Stimme und erschuf damit ein Alter Ego namens Camille, das häufig als böse Seite von ihm interpretiert wurde.
Bei vielen Kritikern gilt "Sign "☮" The Times" als das musikalisch beste Prince-Album. Es erreichte in den amerikanischen Billboard Charts Platz sechs und wurde in den USA ca. 2,5 Million Mal verkauft, wodurch es Platin-Status erlangte. Im Jahr 2009 wählte es das US-Magazin Rolling Stone auf Platz 93 der 500 besten Alben aller Zeiten. Im Jahr 2017 wurde das Album in die "Grammy Hall Of Fame" aufgenommen. In Deutschland wurde "Sign "☮" The Times" 315.000 Mal verkauft und erreichte Platz elf der deutschen Album-Charts, wodurch es Gold-Status errang.
Am 20. November 1987 kam der 85-minütige Konzertfilm "Sign "☮" The Times" in die Kinos, der aus Mitschnitten der letzten drei Konzerte seiner "Sign "☮" The Times"-Europa-Tournee besteht. Mit Ausnahme der Songs "Little Red Corvette" und der Coverversion des Instrumentalstücks "Now's The Time" sind ausschließlich Songs des Albums "Sign "☮" The Times" zu sehen und zu hören.

The release of Sign O’ The Times marks Prince’s first album since his disbanding of the Revolution in October 1986 – the result of which triggering much of the content to be reworked, although members of the Revolution still feature in the final configuration of the album (and entirely on It’s Gonna Be a Beautiful Night – their final recording as a group).
In 1986 Prince planned to release an 18-track double album named Dream Factory, which later that year became an 8 track album named Camille. In early 1987 its configuration evolved into a 22-track triple album and was again renamed, Crystal Ball, and with all the songs credited to Prince but under the pseudonym Camille. When passing it to Warner Brothers they however felt that the scale proposed for the release would be better reduced to a double album and the short listed songs formed this yet again renamed project, Sign O’ The Times (stylized as Sign “☮” the Times).
Sign O’ The Times has since become Prince’s most critically acclaimed work, but sold just 1.8 million copies in the US and 1.3 million elsewhere. It is certified Platinum by the RIAA and is ranked by The Times newspaper at number 23 in their list of top albums of all time. Part of tour supporting it was filmed for the concert movie Sign O’ The Times, with extra scenes filmed at his newly completed and personal studio complex Paisley Park, formerly, ‘The Warehouse’.
