The Jacksons is the 10th album by The Jacksons, the band's first for CBS, following their seven-year tenure on Motown as "The Jackson 5". Jackson 5 member Jermaine Jackson stayed with Motown when his brothers broke their contracts and defected to CBS; he was replaced by youngest Jackson brother Randy. The album was released in 1976 for Epic Records and Philadelphia International Records as a joint venture.
Philadelphia International heads Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff produced and executive produced the album, including their first top ten hit in two years "Enjoy Yourself", but had a difficult time focusing on a sound for the now-grown-up boy band. However, the group was able for the first time to write their own material, something that had been denied to them at Motown. The Jacksons composed "Style of Life" and "Blues Away" on their own. "Blues Away" was the first published song written by lead singer Michael Jackson, who began to take a more percussive vocal approach beginning with this album. This album also spawned the second R&B single "Show You the Way to Go". The album itself placed #36 and #6 on the pop and R&B album charts respectively.
The album was the Jacksons' first gold album, despite their having sold more than 10 million albums while at Motown. (Motown's sales and financial records were never presented for auditing by the RIAA until 1976).
User Album Review
The Jacksons had more control over their music with this cd. One of the things that I liked about 'The Jacksons' was the age-appropriate songs they sang on this cd. As you all know, while they were at Motown, Michael Jackson sang songs that were too old for him to sing. Now that Michael Jackson is older on this cd, the songs are more age appropriate. He is no longer a little kid singing grown up songs. The songs also weren’t bubblegum songs. Bubblegum songs are considered light and fluffy pop songs. In the past, The Jacksons received criticism for their use of bubblegum pop. I never felt that way about the songs. I think they are great. To get back on topic, The Jacksons tackled different issues. They focused on love songs, dance songs, and social issues. The love songs are: Good Times, Blues Away, Show You The Way To Go, Dreamer, and Style of Life. The dance songs are: Enjoy Yourself, Think Happy, Keep On Dancing. The social songs are: Living Together and Strength of One Man.
The songs on The Jacksons were great songs for the 70s era. They had a mixture of disco, funk, and r&b songs. These were really popular genres in the 70s. With the control that the Jacksons had, they got the chance to work with different writers. It gave them a chance to have a new sound to their music. They had a Philadelphia sound with this cd since they worked with Gamble and Huff. Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff worked with The O’Jays and Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes as well as others. What was ironic was Gamble and Huff were competing with Berry Gordy’s artists on Motown. Gamble and Huff wrote Enjoy Yourself, Think Happy, Good Times, Show You The Way To Go, and Dreamer. They also worked with Dexter Wansel who worked on the Jacksons’ Goin Places cd. The Goin Places cd followed this cd. Dexter Wansel wrote Keep On Dancing and Living Together. McFadden and Whitehead wrote Strength of One Man. Michael Jackson wrote his first song on this cd. Michael Jackson wrote Blues Away. The Jacksons wrote Style of Life. I thought all of these songs were really good. I also thought that Michael Jackson started writing songs when he recorded the Off The Wall cd. It was a pleasant surprise to learn that his first song was written on this cd. It’s one of my favorite songs on the cd. Other standouts for me on this cd were: Show You The Way To Go, Living Together, Strength of One Man, and Style Of Life. This was really hard to pick standout songs because they were all really good. In my opinion, there were no filler on this cd.
Michael Jackson’s voice was really good on this cd. With this cd, you get a chance to hear Michael Jackson singing all of the songs. In the past, he had to share some lead vocals with Jermaine Jackson. This time around, Michael Jackson sang the bulk of the songs. His brothers do contribute vocally on the cd. With Jermaine Jackson gone, they got a chance to sing more on the cd. I wasn’t disappointed with their contributions to the songs. They have decent voices too. When Jermaine Jackson was still in the group, they didn’t get the chance to sing very much. It was always Michael and Jermaine Jackson. The Jacksons focused on Michael Jackson and his brothers. You can tell from this cd that Michael Jackson was destined for stardom. He had perfect sound and pitch on this cd. It wasn’t a surprise that he would go on to superstardom not too long after this cd was released. If you don’t have this cd, Michael Jackson sounds similar to the way he sounds on Off The Wall.
The only mini con I will mention is that a couple of the songs were a little long. Good Times, Keep On Dancing, and Show You The Way To Go are a little long. There are too many instrumental pauses in these songs. I don’t always like long instrumental breaks in the songs. I would prefer to hear the singing instead of just the music, but that’s just my opinion. The other songs are not that long, which makes these three songs standout. Good Times and Keep On Dancing are both almost five minutes while Show You The Way To Go is over five minutes. This mini con isn’t that big of a deal. This cd is great. You can still enjoy these songs despite their length.
n conclusion
The Jacksons is a great cd with great songs and singing. The cd is about 40 minutes so you can hear it over and over again. I thought this was a great break away from their Motown sound. The Jacksons showed that they should have been had control over their music. This cd is just as good as any of the Jackson 5 cds. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who is a fan of the Jacksons. I think you will really enjoy it.
