De esta colección de singles de a-ha, descubrí que tenían mucho más de lo que pensaba. Además de «Take On Me», todo lo que sabía de ellos era el magnífico tema dramático «The Sun Always Shines On TV» y el gran tema de Bond «The Living Daylights». Esperaba escuchar un montón de pistas de baile suaves, bastante ligeras, con tal vez un par de canciones más duras. ¡MAL! Muchas de estas pistas pop bordean la roca. La mayoría de las pistas son más fuertes, más oscuras y/o más duras de lo que esperaba. «Manhattan Skyline» alterna pop-rock de bordes duros con secciones más suaves.Hay muchos que son pop fuerte optimista, como «Train Of Thought», «He estado perdiendo», «Cry Wolf», «Touchy!» , «Mover a Memphis» y «Formas que van juntos». Hay pistas de tempo medio con un sonido sólido: «Hunting High And Low», «Summer Moved On», «Minor Earth Major Sky», «Forever Not Yours» y «Lifelines». Hay algunas baladas. «Stay On These Roads», con su fuerte ritmo de tambor, tendría que ser considerado una balada de potencia. Las 2 pistas más ligeras son probablemente «Dark Is The Night For All» y «Velvet». Son bonitas baladas, pero definitivamente no snoozers. Y hay una portada de un éxito de 1962 de Everly Brothers, «Crying In The Rain». No puedo imaginar por qué ninguna de las pistas (aparte de las tres que mencioné primero) fueron éxitos en los Estados Unidos. La producción es creativa y compleja, pero no exagerada, a lo largo de todo el álbum. La instrumentación es excelente. Noté en particular algunas pistas con líneas de bajo inventivas y pronunciadas; ejemplos son «Cry Wolf», «Touchy!» , «Mover a Memphis» y «Formas que van juntos». «Forever Not Yours» hace muy buen uso de un ritmo de hip-hop y una línea de piano lilting. En cuanto a la voz, ya sabía que Morten Harket era un buen vocalista, pero canción tras canción me sorprende con su poder y versatilidad. Cualquiera que le guste la música de los años 80, para empezar, o el pop-rock en general, debería encontrar mucho que gustar en esta colección. Y también es un buen negocio, porque suena por poco menos de 80 minutos.

From this collection of a-ha's singles, I found out that they had a lot more going on than I had thought. Besides "Take On Me", all I knew of them was the magnificent dramatic track "The Sun Always Shines On TV" and the great Bond theme "The Living Daylights". I expected to hear a bunch of fluffy, rather light, dance tracks with maybe a couple of harder ones thrown in. WRONG! A lot of these pop tracks border on rock. Most of the tracks are louder, darker and/or harder than I expected. "Manhattan Skyline" alternates hard-edged pop-rock with softer sections.There are a lot that are strong upbeat pop, like "Train Of Thought", "I've Been Losing You", "Cry Wolf", "Touchy!", "Move To Memphis" and "Shapes That Go Together". There are mid-tempo tracks with a solid sound: "Hunting High And Low", "Summer Moved On", "Minor Earth Major Sky", "Forever Not Yours" and "Lifelines". There are a few ballads. "Stay On These Roads", with its heavy drum beat, would have to be considered a power ballad. The 2 lightest tracks are probably "Dark Is The Night For All" and "Velvet". They are pretty ballads but definitely not snoozers. And there is a cover of a 1962 Everly Brothers hit, "Crying In The Rain".
I cannot imagine why none of the tracks (other than the three I mentioned first) were hits in the US. The production is creative and complex but not overdone, throughout the entire album. The instrumentation is excellent. I noticed in particular some tracks with inventive and pronounced bass lines; examples are "Cry Wolf", "Touchy!", "Move To Memphis" and "Shapes That Go Together". "Forever Not Yours" makes very nice use of a hip-hop beat and a lilting piano line. As for vocals, I already knew Morten Harket was a good vocalist, but song after song he amazes me with his power and versatility. Anyone who likes 80's music, for starters, or pop-rock in general, should find much to like on this collection. And it's a good deal too, because it plays for just under 80 minutes.
