User Album Review
Flotsam and Jetsam generally inspire respect and frustration within the old-school ranks of the metal community. The group's frequent lineup changes and the subsequent uneven discography can confuse casual fans, just as their unrelenting commitment to metal inspires supreme recognition among loyalists. Despite never quite living up to their commercial potential, the group were given many chances by the record industry to fulfill their potential, but offerings like Unnatural Selection always seemed to pop up at the most inopportune times, stalling the momentum created by superior recordings. New members Craig Nielson (drums) and Mark Simpson (guitars) might not have found a groove with vocalist Eric A.K., bassist Jason Ward, and guitarist Ed Carlson, which perhaps would explain the awkward musical direction of Unnatural Selection. A.K.'s vocals are as rugged as ever, and everyone gives the tight performances that listeners have come to expect from the Flotsam and Jetsam. It's the songwriting that holds this disc back. Tracks like "F**kers" lack memorable riffs and the intelligent lyrics the band usually could be relied on to provide. There are a few nice guitar solos and vocal performances, but, ultimately, Unnatural Selection qualifies as a sub par effort from a near legendary, but occasionally unfocused band.
