Private Investigations: The Best of Dire Straits & Mark Knopfler es la tercera compilación de la banda británica Dire Straits y el primero en incluir canciones de Mark Knopfler procedentes de su carrera musical en solitario, así como un adelanto del que sería su siguiente álbum de estudio, All the Roadrunning, grabado junto a Emmylou Harris. Lanzado en 2005, el álbum coincide con el décimo aniversario de la disolución de Dire Straits y con el vigésimo segundo aniversario de la formación del grupo. Curiosamente, evita el segundo álbum del grupo, Communiqué, así como el disco en directo Alchemy. Asimismo, la versión estadounidense del álbum omite "Darling Pretty", añadiendo "Skateway".

El álbum fue publicado en tres distintos formatos:
- Un álbum sencillo (con fondo de portada gris)
- Un álbum doble (con fondo de portada azul)
- Un álbum doble en formato DVD (con fondo de portada dorado)
