Anyone expecting a sequel to the coffee table chic and immediacy of Moon Safari is likely to be wrong-footed by this release. However, those who discovered and appreciated The Virgin Suicides soundtrack from last year will understand Air's change of direction. 10,000 Hz Legend requires perseverance; more experimental and heavy weight this will undoubtedly lose some of their audience whilst simultaneously gaining another.
The tracks play like a quasi-electronic opera based loosely around the tragic love story of two cybernetic beings, or as they call them, Electronic Performers (perhaps a commentary on our increasing reliance on technology to maintain our own relationships).
Their heartfelt confession "How Does It Make You Feel" is a welcome throw back to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon whilst, conversely, the lovers ultimate demise is captured in the dark, sweeping "Sex Born Poison".
Once again the French duo have demonstrated an extraordinary degree of invention causing another wave of hype and some to band around the phrase 'record of the year' - this remains to be seen but so far the odds are looking favourable. So good it hertz.
