"Lovesexy" ist das zehnte Studioalbum von Prince. Es erschien am 6. Mai 1988 bei dem Label Warner Bros. Records / Paisley Park Records und enthält neun Songs, darunter die drei Singles "Alphabet Str.", "Glam Slam" und "I Wish U Heaven". Die Laufzeit des Albums beträgt 45 Minuten und 7 Sekunden. Das Albumcover zeigt ein Foto von Prince, das von Jean-Baptiste Mondino aufgenommen wurde.
Die Albumaufnahmen fanden zwischen dem 11. Dezember 1987 und 31. Januar 1988 in den Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen statt. Damit ist "Lovesexy" das erste Album, das Prince in seinen eigenen Paisley Park Tonstudios aufnahm und anschließend veröffentlichte. Die Paisley Park Studios öffneten am 11. September 1987 und konnten auch von anderen Künstlern gebucht werden.
Die Aufnahmen zu "Lovesexy" begannen unmittelbar, nachdem Prince im Dezember 1987 die Veröffentlichung des "Black Album" abgesagt hatte, und dauerten nur sieben Wochen. Die Liedtexte des Albums sind christlich-religiös beeinflusst und handeln in erster Linie von Gott, dem Teufel und Spiritualität. Die ersten Auflagen der CD wurden ohne Indexmarkierungen versehen, so dass man nicht zu bestimmten Tracks springen konnte, da Prince wollte, dass man das Album als Gesamtwerk hört. Auch ist "Lovesexy" das erste Album, in dem Prince in Songnamen und Liedtexten das englische Wort "eye" in Form eines Auges darstellt, z.B. im Titel des ersten Songs "Eye know".
Aufgrund des anzüglichen Covers wurde das Album in vielen amerikanischen Geschäften nur hinter dem Ladentisch aufbewahrt. Die Verantwortlichen bei Warner Bros. Records hatten dies schon befürchtet, konnten Prince aber nicht zu einem alternativen Albumcover überreden.
"Lovesexy" erreichte in den amerikanischen Billboard Charts Platz elf und wurde in den USA ca. 1 Million Mal verkauft, wodurch es Gold-Status erlangte. In Deutschland wurde das Album 340.000 Mal verkauft und erreichte Platz vier der deutschen Album-Charts, wodurch es ebenfalls Gold-Status errang.
Am 19. April 1989 wurde der Live-Mitschnitt des "Lovesexy"-Konzerts vom 9. September 1988 in Dortmund auf zwei VHS-Video-Kassetten unter dem Namen "Lovesexy Live 1" und Lovesexy Live 2" veröffentlicht.

Released as one continuous track to ensure its listening as one body of work, Lovesexy is an evolution to Prince’s earlier experiment with Around The World In A Day, which he had delayed its first single Raspberry Beret by a whole month to ensure people listened to the entire album first.
Lovesexy began as a bit of a rush project. Written and recorded in haste during December 1987 to replace his suddenly withdrawn hip-hop venture The Black Album. Lovesexy is consequently is one of the fastest albums turned around from creation, to retail, in music history. The artwork for Lovesexy sparked as much interest as the music, for it pictures Prince reclining naked with a lily stamen above his groin, prompting many retailer to conceal the cover with black wrapping (Wal-Mart refusing to sell it at all), deeming it too risqué to display in store. Lovesexy sold 1 million copies in the US but 1.6 million elsewhere. It is certified Gold by the RIAA. Only one of its singles Alphabet St. managed to chart in America, poor sales there saw the supporting tour focus mainly in Europe, where the album had enjoyed greater success; peaking at number 1 in the UK.
