"For You" ist das erste Studioalbum von Prince. Es erschien am 7. April 1978 bei dem Label Warner Bros. Records und enthält neun Songs, darunter die Singles "Soft And Wet" und "Just As Long As We're Together". Die Laufzeit des Albums beträgt 33 Minuten und 26 Sekunden. Das Albumcover gestaltete Jeff Farmakes.
Die Albumaufnahmen fanden zwischen Oktober 1977 und Februar 1978 in Sausalito und Los Angeles statt. Die ersten Demos für das Album nahm Prince bereits im Jahr 1976 auf. Prince komponierte, arrangierte und produzierte alle Songs des Albums. Außerdem spielte er jeden Song des Albums alleine ohne weitere Studiomusiker ein. Die Produktionskosten betrugen 170.500 US-Dollar, womit das von Warner Bros. Records vorgegebene Budget von 180.000 US-Dollar für die ersten drei Prince-Alben fast verbraucht war.
"For You" erreichte in den amerikanischen Billboard Charts Platz 163 und wurde in den USA insgesamt 625.000 Mal verkauft. In Deutschland wurde das Album 50.000 Mal verkauft und erreichte nicht die deutschen Album-Charts.

Prince was aged just 18 at time of the release of For You his debut album, and was the youngest all-in-one, producer, composer, and performer, in the history of major music labels. Like many of his later albums Prince not only wrote, provided all vocals, but played every instrument on the entire album.
For You contains mostly re-recorded songs from earlier demos dating from 1976/7 and the shortlist of the 20 tracks Prince had written to put on it. The album was recorded at Record Plant in Sausalito, California between October and December 1977 and went on to sell 150,000 copies in the US. Patrice Rushen plays the keyboards on Baby, more famous for her 1982 hit single Forget Me Nots. For You peaked in Billboard’s charts at 163 and although is subsequent albums improved, Prince would not find true chart success until his fifth album 1999. Warner Brothers felt Prince and his band were not ready to tour this album, his first tour, therefore, began with his second album.
