"1999" ist das fünfte Studioalbum und erste Doppelalbum von Prince. Es erschien am 27. Oktober 1982 bei dem Label Warner Bros. Records und enthält elf Songs, darunter die fünf Singles "1999", "Little Red Corvette", "Delirious", "Automatic" und "Let's Pretend We're Married". Die Laufzeit des Albums beträgt 70 Minuten und 33 Sekunden.
Die Albumaufnahmen fanden zwischen dem 14. Januar und 14. August 1982 in Chanhassen und Hollywood statt. Als Gastsängerinnen wirken unter anderem Jill Jones, Lisa Coleman, Wendy Melvoin und Vanity mit.
"1999" ist das erste Prince-Album, das kein Porträtfoto von ihm auf der Vorderseite zeigt. Zudem sind auf der LP-Innenhülle und im CD-Begleitheft erstmals die Songtexte abgedruckt. Die erste Auflage der CD enthielt nicht den Song "D.M.S.R.", damit das Album - so ein Aufkleber auf der Rückseite der CD-Hülle - auf eine CD passt. Da allerdings die maximale Spiellänge einer Audio-CD damals 74 Minuten betrug, war diese Maßnahme unbegründet.
Das Album war in den amerikanischen Billboard Charts insgesamt 162 Wochen vertreten und erreichte als höchste Platzierung Platz sieben. Es wurde in den USA ca. 5,5 Million Mal verkauft und erlangte dadurch vierfach Platin-Status. Im Jahr 2008 wurde das Album in die "Grammy Hall Of Fame" aufgenommen. Im Jahr 2009 wählte es das US-Magazin Rolling Stone auf Platz 163 der 500 besten Alben aller Zeiten. In Deutschland wurde das Album 180.000 Mal verkauft und erreichte nicht die deutschen Album-Charts.

Selling 5 million copies worldwide 1999 became the album that propelled Prince to fame, his cross-over album into a white audience, and remains today the favourite of hardcore fans. It is certified Platinum by the RIAA.
The album was written in the summer of 1982, and although Prince wrote all the songs, shown reverse lettering on the cover it is credited to his new backing band The Revolution – the first time his band had been given a name. 1999 was Prince’s first double album (the first five tracks on the first disk, with the remaining six on the second) and also is the Prince album to be pressed to CD: D.M.S.R.2 was omitted due to space constraint in early CD manufacturing technology but is reinstated in later pressings. 1999 is also Prince’s first album for which he employs the use of a drum machine. The album is universally acclaimed; Rolling Stone Magazine listing it 163rd in their top 500 albums of all time. The album originally peaked at number 30 in the US, however, climbed to the number 15 spot in the week following Prince’s death in 2016.
