Death Magnetic est le neuvième album studio du groupe de thrash metal Metallica.
L'album est produit par Rick Rubin et est sorti le 12 septembre 2008.
C'est le premier album de Metallica auquel Robert Trujillo participe et le premier produit par Rick Rubin. Death Magnetic signe le retour de Metallica aux sons plus bruts de ses débuts. Ainsi que le retour des solos du guitariste Kirk Hammett, absents sur l'album précédent.
Le groupe a enregistré 26 chansons en studio, puis la liste des morceaux a été réduite à 14, puis à 11 avec le producteur Rick Rubin.
Seulement 10 chansons seront retenues pour l'album.
La date officielle de sortie de l'album est le 12 septembre 2008 dans le monde entier. L'album a été vendu à quelques exemplaires dans un magasin français le 2 septembre à des fans. Quelques heures après il a été diffusé sur les réseaux peer to peer. L'album était également en vente le 11 septembre à partir de 23h, dans un magasin de CD au Danemark.
Le onzième titre, laissé de côté, est Shine. Selon Lars Ulrich, il sortira un jour ou l'autre. Il est sorti début 2012 sous le titre "Just A Bullet Away".
L'album contient un morceau instrumental (Suicide & Redemption) ; la dernière pièce instrumentale enregistrée par le groupe était To Live Is To Die, sur l'album ...And Justice for All, sorti en 1988.
Le titre de l'album, Death Magnetic, est un hommage aux rockeurs décédés. James Hetfield déclare à ce sujet : « It started out as kind of a tribute to people that have fallen in our business, like Alice In Chains frontman Layne Staley and a lot of the people that have died, basically - rock and roll martyrs of sorts. And then it kind of grew from there. » ("Ça a débuté comme une sorte d'hommage aux personnes qui ont chuté au sein de notre métier, tel le leader d'Alice In Chains, Layne Staley, la plupart des gens qui en sont morts, des martyrs du rock and roll en quelque sorte. Et puis cette idée a grandi et s'est développée en partant de là").
Il ajoute : « Thinking about death... just like a magnet, some people are drawn towards it, and other people are afraid of it and push away. » ("Penser à la mort ... comme un aimant, certaines personnes sont attirées par ça, les autres en sont effrayées et fuient le sujet"). Il continue : « The concept that we're all gonna die sometimes is over-talked about and then a lot of times never talked about - no one wants to bring it up. But we all have to deal with it at some point. » ("Le concept exprimant le fait que nous allons tous mourir un jour est sur-médiatisé, et donc, la plupart du temps, jamais discuté ; personne ne veut le mettre en avant. Mais nous avons tous à y avoir affaire un jour"). De plus, James Hetfield, expliquera au cours d'une interview pour "Metallica - A Culture Show Special", que cet album correspond plus à l'esprit Metallica. Il dit :" Beaucoup de choses ont changé depuis St Anger, moins de portes qui claquent, et un réel esprit de famille". James Hetfield ajoutera même : " Robert Trujilo a déjà contribué, et pour ne pas blâmer Jason Newsted, plus pour ce disque que Jason en 14 ans". James confirmera un retour aux quatre premiers albums pour ce disque, dont il n'est pas peu fier.
La chanson All Nightmare Long a servi de thème musical au pay-per-view de la WWE, No Mercy 2008.
L'EP Beyond Magnetic contient certaines des chansons non-retenues pour cet album, notamment Hell and Back et Hate Train.

It begins with a heartbeat...it could very well be the heartbeat of your average Metallica fan, scared to death, not by the spooky coffin made of iron filings on the cover (see what they did there?) but by the thought that this supposed 'return to form' by the world's once-greatest thrash metal merchants will be lame. Well worry not. After the solo-free St Anger way back in 2003 this is, well, most outstanding.
Never let it be said that Metallica aren't a band of the people, just not the people who file share their back catalogue. You can imagine Death Magnetic blasting out of some tank's soundsystem in the middle east. The closest thing to a ballad is single, The Day That Never Comes, though after a few minutes it descends back into the abyss of raw power. And the only low point comes with the penultimate instrumental, Suicide And Redemption which meanders and has a 'sensitive' solo line at its core that's at odds with the brutality on offer elsewhere.
James Hetfield's lyrics now seem to have become the channel of his post-therapy angst. More cyphers than actual narratives, they come direct from the big book of heavy metal words. Take this example from The End Of The Line, "Need..more and more/Tainted misery/Bleed...battlescars/Chemical affinity/Reign...legacy/Innocence corrode/Stain...rot away/Catatonic overload/Choke...asphyxia/Snuff reality/Scorch...kill the light/Incinerate celebrity/Reaper... butchery/Karma amputee". You get the idea.
But words aren't the major force at work here. It's the irresistible maelstrom of guitars. Kirk Hammett's back to shredding triplets or chiming with Hetfield in Thin Lizzy-esque duels. Balancing vertiginous prog time shifts with chugging power chords, it's amazing how raw and hungry producer Rick Rubin (himself, a thrash connoiseur with Slayer and Wolfsbane albums under his belt) has made the band sound. His greatest contribution is in bringing out the crunch in 'new' boy. Robert Trujillo's bass. On Cyanide he's unstoppable. And, of course, leading the changes is the mighty Lars Ulrich. Possibly the single most erudite expression of metal's paradoxical mix of intelligence matched with dumb, awesome power.
If there's a nagging sensation that the drums sound weird, it's because they're REAL. Say what you will about their psychodramas or political leanings, but this is a band that really can play.
Death Magnetic is the sound of a band giving both themselves and their fans exactly what they need. And nothing else matters...
