Death Magnetic è il nono album in studio del gruppo musicale statunitense Metallica, pubblicato il 12 settembre 2008 dalla Warner Bros. Records.
L'album è il primo del gruppo registrato con il bassista Robert Trujillo, oltre ad essere il primo prodotto da Rick Rubin, dopo che il suo predecessore Bob Rock, già bassista nel disco precedente, aveva prodotto gli album del gruppo dall'album omonimo fino a St. Anger. L'album ha venduto oltre 5 milioni di copie e risulta al quinto posto come album più venduto del 2008.
Agli inizi del 2004, il frontman James Hetfield rivelò che i Metallica avevano già provato del nuovo materiale durante alcune sessioni in studio, senza menzionare tuttavia piani per un nono album in studio al momento. Il bassista Robert Trujillo affermò successivamente che il gruppo compilò circa 50 ore di musica tra centinaia di riff, progressioni di accordi e linee di basso. Il 30 settembre 2004, Launch Radio rivelò da un'intervista con Hetfield che il gruppo sperava di ritornare in studio nella primavera del 2005 per iniziare a registrare il nono album in studio per la Warner Bros. Records.
Il 10 marzo 2006 Rolling Stone riportò che i Metallica pianificarono di utilizzare i sei mesi successivi per comporre il materiale per l'album, in aggiunta ai due mesi precedenti che il gruppo spese per scrivere musica. Il batterista Lars Ulrich inoltre affermò che il gruppo stava andando molto d'accordo in studio rispetto agli anni in cui realizzarono St. Anger. Il 6 aprile, lo stesso Ulrich rivelò che i Metallica avevano composto sei,sette canzoni (escluse le parti vocali), prendendo spunto dai vari riff registrati durante i pre-concerti del Madly in Anger with the World Tour.
Il 20 maggio il chitarrista Kirk Hammett rivelò che erano state composte 15 nuove canzoni mentre Hetfield elogiò il nuovo produttore Rick Rubin per il suo stile di produzione nel dare al gruppo molta libertà e mantenere le tensioni al minimo. Una settimana più tardi i Metallica aggiornarono il proprio sito ufficiale con un video mostrante informazioni relative all'album; all'interno del video, Ulrich disse del nuovo album:
« Ai giorni d'oggi quando sei in studio di registrazione, ognuno presume che tu stia lavorando a del materiale nuovo, cosa che noi tecnicamente abbiamo fatto. La differenza sostanziale tra questo momento e quello passato è che in questi mesi non ci sono state separazioni reali tra la stesura dei brani e la registrazione dei suddetti. Con St. Anger nessuno prese spunto da abbozzi precedenti, è stato realizzato sul momento. Con questo nuovo album invece stiamo facendo esattamente ciò che facemmo con gli album precedenti. »

It begins with a heartbeat...it could very well be the heartbeat of your average Metallica fan, scared to death, not by the spooky coffin made of iron filings on the cover (see what they did there?) but by the thought that this supposed 'return to form' by the world's once-greatest thrash metal merchants will be lame. Well worry not. After the solo-free St Anger way back in 2003 this is, well, most outstanding.
Never let it be said that Metallica aren't a band of the people, just not the people who file share their back catalogue. You can imagine Death Magnetic blasting out of some tank's soundsystem in the middle east. The closest thing to a ballad is single, The Day That Never Comes, though after a few minutes it descends back into the abyss of raw power. And the only low point comes with the penultimate instrumental, Suicide And Redemption which meanders and has a 'sensitive' solo line at its core that's at odds with the brutality on offer elsewhere.
James Hetfield's lyrics now seem to have become the channel of his post-therapy angst. More cyphers than actual narratives, they come direct from the big book of heavy metal words. Take this example from The End Of The Line, "Need..more and more/Tainted misery/Bleed...battlescars/Chemical affinity/Reign...legacy/Innocence corrode/Stain...rot away/Catatonic overload/Choke...asphyxia/Snuff reality/Scorch...kill the light/Incinerate celebrity/Reaper... butchery/Karma amputee". You get the idea.
But words aren't the major force at work here. It's the irresistible maelstrom of guitars. Kirk Hammett's back to shredding triplets or chiming with Hetfield in Thin Lizzy-esque duels. Balancing vertiginous prog time shifts with chugging power chords, it's amazing how raw and hungry producer Rick Rubin (himself, a thrash connoiseur with Slayer and Wolfsbane albums under his belt) has made the band sound. His greatest contribution is in bringing out the crunch in 'new' boy. Robert Trujillo's bass. On Cyanide he's unstoppable. And, of course, leading the changes is the mighty Lars Ulrich. Possibly the single most erudite expression of metal's paradoxical mix of intelligence matched with dumb, awesome power.
If there's a nagging sensation that the drums sound weird, it's because they're REAL. Say what you will about their psychodramas or political leanings, but this is a band that really can play.
Death Magnetic is the sound of a band giving both themselves and their fans exactly what they need. And nothing else matters...
