Death Magnetic (Muerte Magnética) es el noveno álbum de estudio (y decimosegundo en su discografía) de la banda de thrash metal Metallica, que salió a la venta el 12 de septiembre de 2008. Es el primer álbum de estudio de la banda con el bajista Robert Trujillo, puesto que el anterior álbum, St. Anger, el cual contó en el bajo con el ex productor de la banda, Bob Rock, también es el primer trabajo de Metallica en ser producido por Rick Rubin. Death Magnetic es el primer disco del grupo en el que todos los miembros han contribuido en la composición de todas las canciones. Con este último disco se convierten en la primera banda que 5 de sus discos debuta #1 en la lista de los primeros 200 de Billboard. Gracias al número uno que alcanzó Death Magnetic, Metallica desempata con The Beatles, U2 y Dave Matthews Band, grupos que también tuvieron cuatro discos consecutivos en la primera posición y se convierte así en la única en conseguirlo. El grupo estuvo promocionando el álbum desde mayo de 2008 en su página web oficial. Para este disco se empleó el logo original de la banda, desechando el logo más modernizado de anteriores trabajos que se venía usando desde 1995. Dicho álbum cuenta con un EP llamado Beyond Magnetic, el que posee cuatro canciones que fueron descartadas previamente del disco.
Robert Trujillo, actual bajista de la banda, indicó que las dos canciones estrenadas en el tour "Sick Of The Studio 2006", "The New Song" (también llamada "Death Is Not The End"), estrenada el 6 de junio de 2006 en Berlín, Alemania, y "The Other New Song" (también llamada "Vulturous"), estrenada el 12 de agosto de 2006 en Seúl, Corea del Sur, no formaban parte del nuevo álbum en su plenitud, y que sólo porciones de estas podían quedar en el álbum (por ejemplo, la parte final de "The New Song" es incluida después de los 6:30 minutos en "All Nightmare Long", y también el inicio de ésta, es el mismo inicio de "The End Of The Line").
Todas las canciones del disco fueron escritas y compuestas por James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Robert Trujillo, y Lars Ulrich, a diferencia de como hicieron con los álbumes Master Of Puppets, Black Album y ...And Justice For All. Según algunas informaciones del MetClub, Metallica grabó la fase final de las voces, guitarra rítmica y acabados de las canciones para mediados de enero de 2008, el álbum hasta ahora ha vendido alrededor de 5 millones de copias.
El guitarrista Kirk Hammett,(Antes guitarrista y formador de la banda Exodus) afirmó que Lars Ulrich grabó las baterías en los Estudios Sound City y comentó que el sonido era legendario, tal y como las baterías del Master Of Puppets. También planearon volver a sus raíces e introducir un tema instrumental al estilo de "The Call Of Ktulu", "Orion" y "To Live Is To Die". El tema instrumental fue "Suicide & Redemption".

It begins with a heartbeat...it could very well be the heartbeat of your average Metallica fan, scared to death, not by the spooky coffin made of iron filings on the cover (see what they did there?) but by the thought that this supposed 'return to form' by the world's once-greatest thrash metal merchants will be lame. Well worry not. After the solo-free St Anger way back in 2003 this is, well, most outstanding.
Never let it be said that Metallica aren't a band of the people, just not the people who file share their back catalogue. You can imagine Death Magnetic blasting out of some tank's soundsystem in the middle east. The closest thing to a ballad is single, The Day That Never Comes, though after a few minutes it descends back into the abyss of raw power. And the only low point comes with the penultimate instrumental, Suicide And Redemption which meanders and has a 'sensitive' solo line at its core that's at odds with the brutality on offer elsewhere.
James Hetfield's lyrics now seem to have become the channel of his post-therapy angst. More cyphers than actual narratives, they come direct from the big book of heavy metal words. Take this example from The End Of The Line, "Need..more and more/Tainted misery/Bleed...battlescars/Chemical affinity/Reign...legacy/Innocence corrode/Stain...rot away/Catatonic overload/Choke...asphyxia/Snuff reality/Scorch...kill the light/Incinerate celebrity/Reaper... butchery/Karma amputee". You get the idea.
But words aren't the major force at work here. It's the irresistible maelstrom of guitars. Kirk Hammett's back to shredding triplets or chiming with Hetfield in Thin Lizzy-esque duels. Balancing vertiginous prog time shifts with chugging power chords, it's amazing how raw and hungry producer Rick Rubin (himself, a thrash connoiseur with Slayer and Wolfsbane albums under his belt) has made the band sound. His greatest contribution is in bringing out the crunch in 'new' boy. Robert Trujillo's bass. On Cyanide he's unstoppable. And, of course, leading the changes is the mighty Lars Ulrich. Possibly the single most erudite expression of metal's paradoxical mix of intelligence matched with dumb, awesome power.
If there's a nagging sensation that the drums sound weird, it's because they're REAL. Say what you will about their psychodramas or political leanings, but this is a band that really can play.
Death Magnetic is the sound of a band giving both themselves and their fans exactly what they need. And nothing else matters...
