Clint Holmes (born May 9, 1946) is a British-American singer-songwriter, Las Vegas entertainer, and television announcer. He is best known for his hit single "Playground in My Mind."
Biography
Clint Holmes was born in Bournemouth, England, to an African-American jazz musician and an English opera singer. He grew up in Farnham, New York, a small village southwest of Buffalo. His multicultural background has significantly influenced his musical style and versatility.
Initially, Holmes studied vocal music at Fredonia State College, but he left school to serve in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. During his three-year enlistment (1967-1969), he was a member of the United States Army Chorus. After his service, he remained in the Washington, D.C., area, where he launched his civilian career performing in nightclubs.
Musical Career
In June 1972, Holmes released his debut single "Playground in My Mind," which became an international hit in 1973. The song entered the Billboard Hot 100 on March 24, 1973, and eventually climbed to the second spot in the week of June 16-23, 1973. It became one of the biggest hits of the year worldwide. A later single, "Shiddle-ee-dee," reached number 74 on the Canadian AC charts in 1973. The album "Playground in My Mind" reached number 20 in Canada.
According to the autobiography "Johnny Holliday: From Rock to Jock," radio station WWDC played a crucial role in the success of "Playground in My Mind." Johnny Holliday, a well-known radio personality, recalled, "When Clint's record promoter dropped off the single at WWDC, we jumped all over it. It became an overnight hit. Clint is the kind of guy you automatically like the first time you meet him. He and I played tennis at Candy Cane Park in Silver Spring and shot a ton of hoops together. He's a good athlete. I couldn't be prouder of what Clint has accomplished in his career."
Television Career
Holmes was the announcer for "The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers" (1986-1988), the initial broadcast offering of the then-new Fox Broadcasting Company. In 1991, he hosted "New York at Night," a talk show on WWOR in New York City, which aired for a year and won a local Emmy Award.
In 1996, The New York Times Theater Review wrote about "Comfortable Shoes," a show written and performed by Holmes: "Whether you choose to endure two and a half hours of Mr. Holmes's acting and singing, with the assistance of seven other actors and singers, is up to your tolerance for ego-driven showbiz excursions into the orbit of vanities. It is also dependent on your predisposition to Mr. Holmes's talents. And it has a lot to do with your need for an assertiveness-training manual in the guise of musical theater... it looks as if Mr. Holmes wrote the book on self-indulgence."
Holmes has been a popular Las Vegas show attraction since the early 1970s. In 2006, he closed his headlining show at Harrah's Las Vegas Casino, which renamed its main showroom for him. From 1990 to 1995, he hosted the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge on the BET network, and after the event went off-air, he continued to host the final matches through 2008. Many of Holmes' Vegas band members also perform in the locally popular R&B/jazz group Santa Fe and The Fat City Horns. He performed on the cruise ship Galaxy, alongside Jane McDonald.
Holmes returns to Buffalo each March to co-host the annual Variety Kids telethon on WKBW-TV.
Since the opening of the Smith Center for the Performing Arts in 2012, Holmes performs monthly at the Cabaret Jazz Theater. He performed "Auld Lang Syne" at the Smith Center after the New Year's celebration fireworks show on January 1, 2016.
