Gerard van Maasakkers (Nuenen, March 26, 1949) is a Dutch singer-songwriter from North Brabant, known for his songs in the Brabant dialect. His most famous song is undoubtedly "Hee goade mee" ("Are you coming with me"), one of his oldest songs that consistently ranks high in the Brabant Top 100.

Biography

Van Maasakkers was one of the first to reach a broad audience with dialect singing in the late 1970s. His musical journey began at The Spruce Valley Boys boarding school, where he learned to sing. At the age of seventeen, he got his first guitar, and in his student room in Nijmegen, where he attended the Secondary Horticultural School, covers of "House of the Rising Sun", the bass line of "Spics & Specs", and "Streets of London" soon resounded. During those Nijmegen years, he conducted a youth choir and wrote the rock musical "Plint". He later studied at the Higher Education for Garden and Landscape Architects in Boskoop and then at the Higher Forestry and Cultural Technical School in Velp.

In 1978, his debut album "Komt er mer in" ("Just come in") was released, a record with original songs in the Brabant dialect. The album was a success, selling more than 15,000 copies in a short time. From 1980 onwards, Van Maasakkers dedicated himself entirely to music. He released several albums, including a record with Christmas and New Year's songs in collaboration with the Brabant folk music group Ut Muziek. From 1984 to 1987, he toured with the theater program "Zand" ("Sand") together with pianist Dick van de Stoep. During the same period, he began compiling and presenting the art and culture programs "Tussen Amsterdam en Brussel" ("Between Amsterdam and Brussels") and "Muziek beneden de Moerdijk" ("Music below the Moerdijk") for Omroep Brabant.

Between 1991 and 2000, Van Maasakkers took a new direction. Together with his "Vaste Mannen" ("Regular Guys") - Hein Mandos (piano) and Rinus Raaijmakers (double bass) - he presented theater programs with his own work, in which, in addition to the folk influences, chansons, Latin, and jazzy numbers were also featured. Later, Hein Mandos was replaced by Bart de Win, and guitarist Cor Mutsers (ex Ilse DeLange, ex Mathilde Santing and Harry Sacksioni) joined the band. In November 2003, Van Maasakkers received the "Ad de Laat Prijs" award.

In June 2008, Van Maasakkers celebrated his 30th anniversary as a singer with four sold-out concerts in the Muziekcentrum Frits Philips in Eindhoven. A recording of these concerts was released in early 2009 on the CD/DVD "Jubileum" ("Anniversary").

On the occasion of his anniversary in 2008, the tribute album "Anders" ("Different") was released, on which colleagues such as Bennie Jolink, Paul de Leeuw, Guus Meeuwis, Gert Vlok Nel, and Mich Walschaerts sing Van Maasakkers' work.

In 2024, the year in which he turned 75, the singer was the focus of an episode of the TV program "Volle Zalen" ("Full Halls"). That same year, he was the main guest in a broadcast of "Groenteman op Zondag" ("Groenteman on Sunday").
