Brigitte Kaandorp: Dutch Cabaret Performer
Biography
Brigitte Allegonda Maria Kaandorp (born March 10, 1962, in Haarlem, Netherlands) is a respected Dutch cabaret performer. She grew up in a Roman Catholic family as the third of four children. Kaandorp attended the Sint Willibrordus School and later the Triniteits Lyceum in Haarlem. She studied Dutch for two and a half years at the University of Amsterdam. During her university years, Kaandorp frequently performed her own songs in cafes, youth centers, and student venues. A week after she quit her studies, she won the prestigious Cameretten Festival in 1983.
Career, Style, and Awards
Kaandorp's breakthrough came with her 1990 show "Kouwe drukte" ("Cold Fuss"). In the same year, she had a hit with Herman Finkers called "Duet," a parody of "Together We're Strong" by Patrick Duffy and Mireille Mathieu. In her early shows, she worked closely with her eldest brother Peter; later, Bert Klunder took on that role. Kaandorp and Klunder co-starred in "Miss Kaandorp - Brigitte the Musical." Klunder also directed several of Kaandorp's shows until his death in 2006, after which Jessica Borst took over. The solo show "Eh..." was directed by Wimie Wilhelm, who also directed "Gedeelde Smart," a performance featuring Kaandorp and Jenny Arean.
Kaandorp is known for her absurdist style, mixing stunts with songs often sung in a faltering voice.
Personal Life
Kaandorp is married and has two children from a previous relationship.
Honors and Awards
On October 15, 1997, Brigitte Kaandorp performed during a government funding event at the former boiler house of the EBH complex in Haarlem. She has won several awards, including the Gouden Harp (Golden Harp) in 2006. On March 28, 2009, she was appointed Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau. In her show "Eh...", Kaandorp discusses an invitation to a royal state banquet at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam. In 2024, she was awarded the Drs. P Trofee for her ‘flair in representing and promoting the free-spirited anarchistic tradition of Drs. P.’
